SMARTGRIDSChina 2009, the FIRST China International event focusing on the latest smart grid market & technology development, was successfully ended on November 5, 2009. The 3-day conference, which started from November 3, gathered nearly 400 leading utility leaders and industry professionals. The conference provided comprehensive coverage of smart grids, and leave participants with a clear understanding of the possibilities, as well as the strategic insights necessary to suggest and decide how to best move forward.

Different from other smart grid events, SMARTGRIDSChina 2009 addressed the development issues on the power distribution sides as well as the Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) adopted by smart grid. According to the prospect of the organizer, GSL Consulting Ltd. China, China’s current smart grid plan announced by China State Power Grid Corp. (SPGC) placed more importance on the UHV transmission projects, the fragile power distribution network is also one of the key areas in China’s smart grid deployment. Meanwhile, latest government policies and standards related to smart grids were also discussed in details.

Generally, the SMARTGRIDSChina 2009 conference was consisted of 6 sessions of smart grid design and implementation and one and half day smart grid workshop conducted by Mr. Meir Shargal, the principal of SMART Energy Alliance/Capgemini. In the first session/the opening session, keynote speakers from CEPRI of State Power Grid Corp. (Mr. BAI Xiaomin), Heilongjiang Power Grid Company (WANG Xuan), Chinese Academy of Science (WU Jiandong), and State Power Economic Research Center (HU Zhaoguang) delivered exciting speeches about the China’s smart grid development strategies and outlooks of china’s electricity market changes. In the following 5 sessions, 15 speakers and chairmen from both China and international smart grid industries made in-depth discussion on ICT development strategies, utility’s smart grid strategies and insights, perspectives from North America, EU and China, smart distribution & substation, and IT infrastructure requirement & smart grid solutions. From the second day afternoon to the third day, Mr. Meir Shargal conducted the smart grid workshop introducing the smart grid initiatives of different economy regions, development roadmap of smart grids and case studies of typical pilot smart grid projects. By the end of the conference, an expert panel discussion was arranged by the organizer to express different views and opinions on China Smart Grid Development Roadmap.

Through the whole conference, we found that the tremendous investments on smart grid by different countries have attracted most attention of many related industries including power utility, power instrument industry and advanced IT industry (hardware and software) etc. Especially in the crucial period of global economy recovery, many economy entities/countries will take their smart grid investment as an important economical bailout measure. Therefore it is a great opportunity for related technology suppliers and electrical instrument vendors . The SMARTGRIDSChina event is regarded as the right industrial information platform for business opportunity discovery and exchange of experiences as well as industry.

Paralleling with the conference, an innovation-driven exhibition was also hosted in this event and 8 leading technology suppliers and vendors such as Itron, KGE China, NEC, etc. showcased their innovation technologies as well as latest products to their potential customers/partners from more than 100 organizations/companies.
